Karl Marx was NOT Russian; He never stepped foot in Russia!

Karl Marx was a philosopher, political thinker, and the father of communism. but he was not Russian. in fact, he was never known to set foot in the country whose history he would so indelibly influence.

Karl Marx was born in 1818, in Prussia, Germany to a Jewish family. His father was a lawyer, and later had the family convert to Christianity. As an adult, however, Marx maintained no religious beliefs, famously saying, ”Religion is the opium of the people.” This was often misquoted as, “Religion is the opiate of the masses.”

At the age of 25, Marx left Germany for Paris, where he met his lifelong collaborator, Friedrich Engels. Just a year later, he was expelled from the French capital. He then lived in Brussels, Belgium for three years before finally settling in London, where he lived until his death on March 14th, 1883.

In 1848, Marx wrote The Communist Manifesto with the opening line, ”The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles.” The first volume of his most famous work, Das Kapital, was published in 1867, but Marx lived much of his life in poverty and relative obscurity. He even supplemented his income during the 1850s by serving as a foreign correspondent for the New York Herald Tribune.

Marx believed that wealth should be distributed “from each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs”, and that communism was the inevitable next evolutionary step after capitalism.

More than 30 years after his death, these ideas formed the basis of the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution in Russia. A wave of Communism followed, and by the early 1980s almost one-third of the world’s population lived under communist rule. however, these oppressive regimes have badly misrepresented much of marxist philosophy. There remain as many misconceptions about his work as there are about his life.
