When is President’s Day? No such holiday 2020?

When is President’s Day? No such holiday?

Making big plans to celebrate President’s Day? Be careful, the US government says there’s no such holiday.

It all began in 1885, when the federal government made George Washington’s birthday, February 22nd, a national holiday. That made Washington the first person to have a federal holiday named after him. This was fine until 1968, when Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holidays Act, which moved Washington’s Birthday to the third Monday in February. Several other holidays were also moved, supposedly so that families could spend more recreational time together. Cynics have long suspected that the real reason had to do with boosting both tourism and holiday retail sales.

During discussions of the Monday holiday law, some members of Congress lobbied to change Washington’s Birthday to President’s Day, thereby including Abraham Lincoln in the honors. They figured Lincoln deserved equal billing, and besides, the third Monday in February always falls between Washington’s birthday and Lincoln’s birthday. But the effort failed and the federal holiday remained Washington’s Birthday.

At least, officially. That’s because there is no law that says states have to play by the fed’s holiday rules. So while some states went along with the government, a few decided to rename the holiday President’s Day. Other states celebrate Washington’s and Lincoln’s birthday separately and some went so far as to move the dates to completely different months. For example, Georgia celebrates Washington’s birthday in December.

If that weren’t bad enough, there’s apparently no agreement on the spelling of the day, which can be Presidents’ Day, Presidents Day, or President’s Day, depending on where you live. The official name of the holiday is Washington’s Birthday, regardless of what all the retail ads that weekend say.
